Brass alloys are widely used not only for their mechanical strength but also for
their corrosion resistance. These properties are directly related by their
microstructure resulting from the manufacturing process. In the manufactured
parts as cast case, the microstructure is mainly dendritic type. The technique of
EBSD (Electron Backscattered Spectrum Diffraction) provides information for
the improvement of the behavior of the materials, relating the grain orientation
relationships and their mechanical properties. The aim of this work is to
evaluate the behavior of a cast brass with induced cracking in a corrosive
medium (NH 4 OH). The difference of orientation in the propagation of the crack
is studied by analyzing the crack propagation from pole figures obtained in
which the associated orientation difference due to planes and preferential
directions, are shown and texture. The microstructure corresponds to a material
with high anisotropy; however, most of the misorientations of the grain edge
corresponds to high angle type, inducing the crack growth alongside in the
Interdendritic spacing.
