Metal corrosion is a serious problem that affects many industries and bring wide
loss to economy. Blending polyaniline (Pani) with inorganic particles as silica (SiO 2)
is a useful approach for developing new hybrid materials, which combine
mechanical strength and thermal resistance of the inorganic component and the
electrical properties of Pani. Moreover, SiO2 can improve hardness and adhesion of
the corresponding hybrids with metal substrates, which are very important for
coating applications. The main objective of this research is the development of an
epoxy coating blended with a polyaniline-silica hybrid and the performance
evaluation in metal corrosion protection. Two Pani-SiO2 hibrids with different
concentrations of silica (0,25 e 2,5g/0,93g Silica/Pani) were prepared by in situ
chemical oxidative polimerization of aniline in the presence of SiO2, with
ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator and dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA)
acting as surfactant and dopant. It was also used cetyltrimethylammonium bromide
(CTAB) as co-surfactant. After that, the hibrids were dispersed in a concentration of
5 wt% in the epoxy resin and cured with a cycloaliphatic amine at ambient
temperature. Finally the metal plaques were coated with the aid of a brush. The
paint protection against corrosion was evaluated on an Autolab PGSTAT302N
impedance analyzer. It was performed the Tafel extrapolation that provides the
corrosion rate of the coating during a year, which were 9.2308E -5 , 5.6255E -5 and
5.8115E -6 mm/year for pure epoxy, epoxy-Pani-SiO2 0,25 and epoxy-Pani-SiO2 2,5
respectively. The result suggests that silica has an important influence in the
corrosion protection, what probably happen because increase the adhesion of the
paint in the metal surface. Therefore this result show the effectiveness of the hibrids
on metal protection, mainly when increase the silica content.
