3D scanners are very useful technologies in the design world. These
technologies can be within reach if you go deeper into their development. The
method of laser and camera triangulation is an excellent alternative for the
implementation of this type of technology in an economical way. Developing
control software and using easily obtainable elements, such as: an image
acquisition card, a camera, a pointing laser, a computer and a structure that
allows coordinates to be positioned through a computer, a digital scanning
system can be obtained. In this article, we present an alternative to calculate
distances by using a laser pointer and a webcam. The objective is to determine
the distance to which an object is located. The procedure involves the processing
of images to determine the displacement of the laser pointer. The results are
shown in a graph where the results of the calculation and the behaviour of the
error are compared.
