In this work, polysulfone films (PSf) were modified, with the pre-irradiation
oxidative method, by using γ-rays Co 60 source at room temperature . Namely,
PSf were irradiated at different doses 100 to 400 kGy, at a doses rate of 9.6
kGy/h, using aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with different
concentrations, ranging 3 to 12% w/v. To determine the grafitng percentage of
PVA onto PSf, the reaction temperature (50 to 80 °C) and the reaction time (4 to
21 h) were varied. After irradiation, PSf were extracted and washed for 24 h,
dried for 21 h at room temperature and in a vacuum oven for 2 h at 25 °C. The
dried PSf were weighed and their grafting percentage was determined by weight
difference. Finally, the grafted films were characterized by means of the contact
angle technique, infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR-ATR),
thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and
scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
We thank Dr. Alejandra Ortega and Dr. Efraín Rodriguez for their assistance with
the contact angle characterization and thermal analysis (TGA and DSC),
respectively. Fredy Sánchez is grateful to CONACyT for his scholarship.
