For years, the multiferroic properties of bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 ) have been
studied, however, the band gap value is one of the most remarkable features of
this material, making possible its application as visible-light photocatalyst. In this
sense, the photocatalytic activity of diverse compounds of Bi 1-x Ba x FeO 3 (x=0.05,
0.075, 0.10 and 0.15) synthesized by the Pechini method were investigated in
the photodegradation of p-cresol. X-Ray Diffraction results confirmed the
formation of rhombohedral structure of the BiFeO 3 phase in all the specimens
as well as a minimum of secondary phase in some compounds. Crystal sizes
between 20 and 50 nm were calculated by Sherrer equation. Transmission
Electron Microscopy confirmed the crystal size of the nanopowders. Rietveld
refinement analysis revealed changes in the lattice parameters by the increment
of doping in the compounds, as well as an estimation of the content of phases
in the specimens. UV-Vis spectroscopy contributes to determine the band gap
values of the samples (2.18-2.25 eV) which they decrease when doping
increases. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed the morphology of the
compounds. The superficial area of the photocatalyst was obtained by BET
analysis displaying values up to 60 m 2 /g. Finally, all the compounds presented
good photocatalytic response in the degradation of p-cresol.
