Duplex stainless steels have an interesting combination of mechanical and
corrosion resistance and cost that place theses steels as an alternative to
austenitic stainless steel. Fusion processes commonly generate three distinctive
zones, i.e., heat affected zone, weld metal and base metal. It is known that any
arc welding process performed on duplex stainless steels could introduce
modifications in the resulting microstructures and heat affected zone. Welded
samples were characterized using Vickers microhardness measurements,
scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical test. The Palmgren-Miner
cumulative damage calculation method was applied to specimens in order to
stablish the fatigue life. Tension test results of specimens with cumulative
fatigue damage ratios of 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90 % exhibit yield stress and tensile
strength higher than undamaged values. Finally, experimental results show that
accumulated fatigue damage changes the shape of the elastic to plastic
transition of the stress-strain curve.
