TECHNIQUE
In the CBD technique two main mechanisms are considered: ion by ion
(heterogeneous reaction) and cluster by cluster (homogeneous reaction). The
homogeneous deposition is highly undesirable leading to powdery and nonadherent
films while for a better film quality, the heterogeneous process is
desirable. To reduce the homogeneous nucleation has been proposed the
named shallow CBD technique, as an alternative technique the traditional CBD,
where the solution and the substrate are at different temperatures, where the
solution is maintained at a temperature lower than the substrate temperature.
In this way, the homogeneous nucleation is reduced and with it the negative
aspects inherent to this reaction, and additionally the amount of solution used
is reduced. In this paper are presented the preliminary results of the application
of shallow CBD technique in the deposits of CdS buffer layers to be used in the
processing of second generation of solar cells. UV–visible spectrophotometry,
scanning electronic microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were employed to
characterize the quality of the thin film obtained. The experimental results
showed that shallow chemical bath deposition can be considered as an excellent
alternative method to the traditional chemical bath deposition technique.
