Barium titanate (BaTiO3, BTO) is a very attractive ferroelectric material due to its
applications such as tunable capacitors, nonvolatile memories, surface acoustic
wave devices, pyroelectric detectors, etc. On the other hand, polyvinylidene
fluoride (PVDF) is one of the most promising polymer materials due to its
piezoelectric and pyroelectric effects. PVDF has low permittivity, low thermal
conductivity and is flexible and relatively low in cost. In this work composite
structures based on PVDF and BaTiO3 nanostructures were evaluated as a
piezoelectric platform. BTO was mixed with PVDF in different concentration to
improve the piezoelectric β-phase. The composites were characterized through
scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray
diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectroscopy. The composite piezoelectric
characteristics were studied via piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). A
correlation was found between composite concentration of BTO and an
increment of the piezoelectric response. Therefore, it is possible to design a
piezoelectric polymer with increased response that might be used in pressure
sensing.
