Arsenic is a highly toxic element usually found in groundwater, whose
consumption can lead to serious health problems, such as cancer. Among the
strategies used to remove arsenic water, adsorption has a great potential due
to its simplicity and scalability. However, this method is strongly pH dependent
and affected by secondary salts in solution. In order to avoid this problem we
have combine the large surface area and inherent functional groups of
graphene oxide and calixarenes, macromolecules that can be tuned to have a
stronger chemical interaction with a specific molecule. Materials have been
characterized by FT-IR, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, XPS and zetapotential.
Graphene oxide isotherms with different grades of oxidation show a
maximum capacity adsorption of 42.19 mg g-1 and 50.51 mg g-1 for AsIII specie
for graphene oxide with lower and higher degree of oxidation, respectively, so
it can be a good alternative for arsenic removal.
