The effects of chemical modification and changes in the parameters of the
homogenization and annealing treatment on the microstructure and stamping
quality of AA3003 alloys used for the manufacture of heat exchangers were
investigated in the present work. The investigated stamping parameters were
lubrication, shut height and punching speed. The values used for the
experiments were set according to a factorial experimental design. The
experimental results show that modifications above mentioned have an
important influence on the distribution and size of precipitated dispersoids.
Cracks in the aluminum sheets during stamping were avoided due to variations
in the size of the dispersoids which allowed to achieve the required properties
and the optimum surface quality in the stamped Al sheets. Stamping process
was finally optimized from the results of the main effect plots using a
commercial software considering the quality of the stamping product as the
response, as a function of the stamping parameters.
