Hydrotalcite like materials were synthesized by the coprecipitation method,
adding sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) during the synthesis. Bare materials
(without SDS) were synthesized at the same conditions in order to compare the
properties and the photocatalytic behavior. Once obtained these materials, they
were calcined at 400°C in order to obtain ZnO, whose physical, chemical and
optical properties were characterized by XRD, IR, UV, PL and XPS spectroscopies.
The photocatalytic activity of both, bare and modified calcined materials was
evaluated in the photo degradation of phenol in aqueous phase (40 ppm)
irradiated with UV ligth (254 nm). An increasing of around of 30% in the
photodegradation and mineralization of the phenol molecule, followed by UV
spectroscopy and TOC analysis respectively, were observed when the SDS
modified material was used as photocatalyst. This higher photoactivity could be
attributed to the decrease in the band gap values 3.2 to 3.0 eV in the modified
material as well as to the presence of sulfate groups on the surface of that
material, confirmed by the IR and XPS spectroscopic analysis, which could
promote the generation of oxidant radicals during the reaction.
