The amalgam electrodes, where the solid surface is covered by mercury, allow
to carry out electrochemical experiments at most negative potential range than
those realized only with solid electrodes. In the present work, a laboratory-made
Pt/Hg amalgam electrode was used for the generation of pitting corrosion on
304 stainless steel in trichloroacetic acid solution using a scanning
electrochemical microscope (SECM). SECM imaging of the pit evolution as well
as the voltammetry of oxidation of ions in solution are presented.
Keywords: Amalgam electrode, pitting corrosion, scanning electrochemical
microscope (SECM)
