In the present paper, mucilage of Opuntia ficus indica and Opuntia spinulifera
were studied using different characterizations. Determining in both cases
excellent thermoregulatory behavior with a value of Cp 1 cal / g- o C. The
antioxidant capacity in metals as Al, Sn and Fe coated with the mucilage was
evaluated, obtaining and excellent protection by Al and Fe against HCl (40 %)
and alkali NaOH (40 %) respectively, at room temperature. Its electrolytic
character was also confirmed with electrolysis experiments, determining
conduction higher values for O. spinulifera. According to our preliminary results,
they offer promissing applications of the mucilage in non-traditionals areas.
