One of the main objectives of root canal treatment is the chemical-mechanical
disinfection. Even though root canal success rates have increased in recent
years, endodontic failure still occurs in relatively high ranges even after
adequate instrumentation, irrigation, and disinfection protocols. Part of this
may be due to the complicated internal anatomy of the root canals with the
presence of isthmus, recurrent canals, etc .; which prevents the penetration of
the irrigant and tends to prevent the proper elimination of microorganisms due
to exposure to sublethal doses of irrigant that allow the bacteria to adapt and
even become more resistant. In recent years silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have
been studied for use as an endodontic irrigator but little is known about the
possible mechanisms of adaptation to these by endodontic bacteria due to the
aforementioned clinical conditions. The objective of this study is to determine
the prevalence of genes of resistance to silver in root canal bacteria with
secondary endodontic infection and to determine if the endodontic bacteria are
capable of developing resistance to silver nanoparticles.
