This work is on the application of a surface hardening process to both pure Ti-2
and the alloy Ti-6Al-4V, in order to compare the mechanical properties of the
resulting boride layers. The surface hardening process consists on the boron
diffusion and it is known as boriding. The process was performed in a
conventional furnace in absence of inert atmosphere. A uniform boride layer,
composed mainly of TiB2 and TiB phases, was formed on the surface of both Ti-
2 and Ti6Al4V alloy. The thickness of the boride layers was in the range of 10 to
25 µm. Also a well-defined diffusion zone of about 50 µm was observed in both
materials. The hardness values of the boride layers were over 200 HV and was
gradually decreasing toward the substrate. The results shown that the Hardness
values obtained for the Ti-6Al-4V were higher than those obtained for the pure
Ti-2, because of the influence of the alloying elements.
