SURFACE PLASMONS IN MODIFIED ATR KRETSCHMANN
GEOMETRIES
We study theoretically the elementary characteristics associated to surface
plasmons that occurs in a finite metallic slab.In particular, we are interested in
the difference in field enhancement between a flat surface and the finite slab.
The effect of interference between the surface plasmons confined to the slab,
produce an increase of the field enhancement at the metal-dielectric interface.
We study the effect of the length of the slab in the field enhancement, and show
that it can be larger than the obtained for an infinite flat interface. The system
is studied using an arrangement of attenuated total reflection (ATR) in the
Kretschmann geometry. For the infinite case, we compare the analytical results
for reflectance and field enhancement, with finite differences in time domain
(FDTD) using a pulsed beam of light as a source, to verify the convergence of
FDTD in this geometry. The geometry used (glass-metal-air) under resonance
conditions (optimum metal thickness, angle of incidence, etc.). For the finite slab,
we compute the electromagnetic fields for different slab size using FDTD.
