FRACTURE FAILURE ASSESSMENT IN API 5L X70 PIPELINE STEELS<br />

Structural integrity assessment in hydrocarbon transportation systems has<br />

become critical especially in very old pipes and due to the diverse geography of<br />

Peru, which produces unexpected load conditions. In many situations, the flaws<br />

that cause structural failure are cracks, which can be located and sized by<br />

modern inspection methods. However, we need to know how they respond to<br />

the various operating conditions. In this work, it is used the failure assessment<br />

diagrams (FAD) method presented in the API 579 procedure, for crack behavior<br />

assessment in hydrocarbon transportation pipes API 5L X70. The investigation<br />

is developed in conjunction with finite element simulation techniques for<br />

fracture parameters calculation. Models of increasing complexity are developed<br />

for determining appropriate mesh characteristics and the results are validated<br />

with the solutions given by API 579. Validated models are applied to the case of<br />

severity assessment of outer semi-elliptical surface cracks in hydrocarbon gas<br />

pipelines, proving its utility in making decisions regarding safe operating<br />

conditions.<br />
