Selective coatings for solar-to-thermal energy conversion are characterized by a
high solar absorptance combined with a low thermal emittance in the near
infrared region. Specific applications require selective coatings with specific
properties, which are mainly determined by the working temperature of the
application. In this work, we focus on selective coatings based on molybdenum
and alumina on a glass substrate to be applied in mid temperature range (300
ºC – 400 ºC).
Rectangular magnetron guns (20 x 5 cm 2 ) with Mo and Al2O3 targets were used
to deposit different configurations of selective solar coatings, with the general
structure of glass/Mo/Mo-Al2O3 cermets /antireflection Al2O3. Individual films of
interest of Mo, Al2O3 and Mo-Al2O3 cermets, and the respective selective coatings
were prepared and studied in detail by XRD, EDS, SEM, XPS and reflectance
spectroscopy. The solar absorptance and thermal emittance of the selective
coatings obtained were determined from the UV-Vis-IR reflectance spectrum.
The relation between optical properties of the selective coatings and its
configuration is discussed.
