A series of α-Fe 2 O 3 -TiO 2 catalysts were synthesized at room temperature using
the co-precipitation method. These catalysts were subjected to a heat treatment
at 673 K, 773 K and 873 K. The catalysts were characterized using N 2 -
physisorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), DR-UV-Vis, SEM and VSM. Samples were
evaluated in phenol hydrogenation. The catalyst activity has been studied at 6.8
MPa and 553 K. Reactions were followed using gas chromatography. Material
treated at 673 K was doped with Rh and evaluated in the same reaction. It is
observed that when using the catalyst doped with Rh in the reaction, the
percentage of phenol decreases drastically and is almost nil at 20 minutes. The
effects of the annealing temperature and the addition of Rh are discussed.
Keywords: hydrogenation, phenol, hematite
