Solgel transparent thin films of ZnO and ZnO:Cu were deposited onto
borosilicate glass substrates by the spin coating method. Zinc acetate dihydrate,
monoethanolamine and propanol were used as the starting material, stabilizer,
and solvent respectively. The films were annealed in air at 500 °C. The effect of
Copper doping on the optical, morphological and structural properties of
the ZnO thin films were studied. Both films are highly transparent with
transmission >80% in the visible range, increasing these transmittance, for the
doped ZnO thin films with Copper. For these ZnO and ZnO:Cu thin films, the
measured band gap values were 3.27 and 3.29 eV respectively. For structural
analyses, the powders and thin films were characterized by XRD method, and its
analysis revealed that the annealed ZnO and ZnO:Cu thin films have only
wurtzite structure. HRTEM analysis of these annealed thin films has shown, the
hexagonal crystalline structure with d= 2.8 Å in the plane (100). Morphological
differences of the ZnO and ZnO:Cu thin films was achieved by field emission
scanning electron microscopy. The results of this study demonstrate that the
ZnO:Cu films exhibit better optical properties. These results confirm that ZnO:Cu
films prepared the solgel process are still suitable for practical applications.
