SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NANOSTRUCTURED
NiO FILMS FOR CATALYTIC ACTIVITIES OF NAPROXEN AND
NAPHTHALENE

Nanostructured NiO films were obtained by Sputtering using two different Ni
targets, Lesker (99.995% Ni) and Installtek (99.9% Ni with less than 0.03% Fe, Si,
and Mg impurities). NiO films were obtained by varying time in 6, 12, 24, 30, 48
and 60 minutes and controlling the power (100 W), the distance to target (11 cm)
and pressure (5mtorr) inside the chamber. The films were characterized by X ray
diffraction to evaluate the crystal structure, NiO formation was identified. The
NiO nanostructured topography was obtained by AFM and SEM techniques.
Furthemore, profilometry and ellipsometry were used to measure films
thicknesses.
The catalytic activity of NiO films in the decomposition of Naphthalene and
Naproxen compounds was determined with the ozonation method. The
ozonation process was carried out at room temperature in a glass reactor with
a capacity of 500 mL showed the elimination of naphthalene and naproxen in
short treatment times. With the results obtained, the nanostructured NiO films
deposit conditions will be optimized in order to improve their catalytic
properties.
