Three series of highly functionalized polymers of Poly(butyl acrylate-acrylic acidmethyl
methacrylate-acril amide) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization
via a power feed semiconscious process. The total functional groups
concentration were varied 15 to 25 wt.% and the number of particles in the
system was kept constant. The carboxylic and amino groups concentration
inside particles were varied 100-0, 75-25, 50-50, 25-75 and 0-100 wt-wt.%,
respectively. The thermodynamic behavior of the series of functionalized
polymers with different functional groups concentrations were compared.
Partial volumes and partial adiabatic compressibilities of particle at infinite
dilution were calculated density and sound speed data. These properties were
interpreted in terms of the atomic, free volume and hydration contributions. By
isothermal titration calorimetry, the heats of reaction were measured during
changes in titration of calcite powder with the polymeric material. From these
data, the reaction enthalpies were calculated to determine the interaction of the
functional groups present and the calcium ions.
