Iron doped zinc oxide [ZnO:Fe] thin solid films were obtained by the sol-gel
technique, using the dip-coatting procedure. Glass slides were used as
substrates, in the 100-500 °C annealing temperature range. The solid films
obtained were characterized structurally and optically by the following
techniques: FT-IR and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The band gap energy (E g ) of
the thin solid films was obtained it UV-Vis spectra (diffuse reflectance) and their
thickness was evaluated by profilometer measurements. It was found that, as
the substrate temperature increases, the band gap energy decreases, reaching
a minimum value in the order of 3.26 eV, at 500 C. The Raman spectra of the
solid films show a peak at E 2 (high) = 410 cm -1 , attributed to wurtzite structure
zinc oxide. Such peak is more intense at 500 °C, indicating an improvement in
the crystal structure of the films. The FT-IR spectrum shows the absorption band
assigned to the vibrational mode of zinc–oxygen around 510 cm -1 . The bands at
1315 cm -1 and 1510 cm -1 can be assigned to α-Fe 2 O 3 (hematite) stretching
vibrations. The same bands are observed in the micro-Raman spectrum around
221, 290 and 608 cm -1 , respectively.
