INTERNAL CURING IN HIHG PERFORMANCE CONCRETE WITH FLY
ASH EMPLOYING PUMICE AND SUPERABSORBENT POLYMERS
Greisy Guadalupe Barrera Alvarez 1
High strength concrete has higher properties than conventional concrete, so this
type of concrete is increasingly used in the construction of bridges, buildings,
parking lots and other types of structures, due to its high resistance.
The high performance concrete is characterized by having a very high
compressive strength, using fly ash, the amount of portland cement is reduced,
and the concrete has better workability and durability.
Internal curing of high performance concrete is a method used to counteract
self-dehydration and autogenous shrinkage that leads to early concrete
cracking.
The superabsorbent polymers as well as the pumicite have the capacity to
absorb a quantity of water of the mixture in a fresh state, to later release it, when
the humidity decreases due to the hydration process maintaining the internal
humidity. The use of these materials, well distributed, can be the solution to the
problem of contraction and self-dehydration, thus improving the properties of
the concrete.
In this work, concretes with two internal curing methods (Pumice and SAP`s)
were studied in combination with fly ash as supplementary cementing material
in a 20% substitution, seeking to improve the properties of strength, durability
and permeability. The tests performed were: Compressive sterngth, chloride ion
permeability, corrosion of reinforcing steel and electrical resistivity. Conclusion
are made about the use of these materials for curing internal of the concrete.
