The Portland cement production at international level generates a high negative
environmental impact but is necessary for the economic development of the
society, that´s why is necessary to find a material which can reduce the natural
resources demand. The ancient Romans used volcanic ashes, known as
pozzolan, that contains silica and alumina, when they get chemical combined
with lime generate the denominated Pozzolanic cement (getting from Puzzuoli,
near Vesubio). Studies done with different crop residues from the sugar industry
like cane bagasse´s ashes, shows its potential use thanks to its pozzolanic
properties, when this residue is finely divided or powdered in contact with water
chemically reacts with the calcium hydroxide which contributes the hydration of
the Portland cement to form components with cementing properties. The
mortar elaborated with these materials was designed in relation the ASTM-C-
109/2002 standard, relation 1:2.75 (cementing-water). Three different mortar
mixes were done, a control mortar (cement-sand-water-fluidifier), and two
modified mixes, one mix with addition of CBA in a +5% and the other one with
substitution of CBA in a -5%, in relation of the mass of the cement, with the
objective to find the pozzolanic reactivity of this crop residue and give a
recommendation for its use in the mortars elaboration. Having as a purpose of
this study the performance of the mortar´s physical-mechanicals characteristics
and can contribute to the reduction of the environmental impact generated for
the cane bagasse´s ashes.
