Hydroxyapatite (HAp; Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is the mineral component of vertebrate
hard tissues. A well-controlled orientation is considered a key factor in the
development of high-performance materials. Several studies on orientationcontrolled
HAp particles, coatings and dense ceramics have been reported
elsewhere [1-2]. In this study, the microstructural characterization of
hydroxyapatite nanofibers obtained by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal
synthesis method is presented. The High Resolution Transmission Electron
Microscopy results show oriented growth of nanofibers in the c direction of the
structure, which gives an improvement in its mechanical and biocompatibility
properties. In addition, the analysis of XRD and IR confirm the preferential
growth along “c” direction.
