CHARACTERIZATION ON BaO-MgO-V2O5 AND SnO2-MgO-Sb2O3<br />

SYSTEMS.<br />

It is observed that the formation of ternary and binary phases during the solidstate<br />

reaction between two mixtures of BaO-MgO-V 2 O 5 and SnO 2 -MgO-Sb 2 O 3<br />

can be detected using powder X-ray diffraction, XRD. Both mixtures react and<br />

form several compounds: Ba 3 (VO 4 ) 2, BaMg 2 (VO 4 ) 2, MgV 3 O 8 , BaV 3 O 8 for the first<br />

mixture and the second one forms: Sn 0.918 Sb 0.109 O 2 , MgSb 2 + 5O 6 . Some changes<br />

of the crystalline structure were detected, by the XRD, due to the introduction<br />

of cations, form the reagents, of different size into the crystalline structure of<br />

the binary and ternary compounds.<br />

Thermal Analysis characterization was used to know on what range of<br />

temperatures the reaction could occur and to know when the products were<br />

able to react as oxides, because the BaO was obtained the decomposition of<br />

BaCO 3 .<br />

Carry out the reaction into a high-alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) crucible implies a slow cooling<br />

compared to cooling in a Platinum crucible. It has an effect too in the reaction<br />

products, because when the cooling of the products is made into an ice bath<br />

media (when the products were into the platinum crucible), apparently has a<br />

different effect the air (for the alumina crucible) in the formation of crystalline<br />

phases, having a wider range of different crystalline phases in the case of carry<br />

out the reaction into an alumina crucible. The cooling velocity had an affect in<br />

the x-ray diffractograms to, because when the products were cooled in the<br />

alumina crucible, results were displaced the x-ray patterns of the<br />

crystallographic sheets, and in the case of the ice bath cooling, results were<br />

aligned with the sheets. Two isostructural compounds related with ScSbO 4 and<br />

Ba 3 (VO 4 ) 2 were obtained with this variation of the cooling stage. These results
