APPLICATION OF AN HEURISTIC METHOD FOR THE OPTIMIZATION
OF PEM FUEL CELLS
Edumis Viera Martin 1
Overpotential is a critical problem to overcome in PEM fuel cell technology.
Models play an important role in fuel cell design and development, since
understanding the influence of different parameters on the cell performance
allows for a systematic simulation. In this work, a previously developed and
validated model is used to predict activation, ohmic, and concentration losses in
PEM fuel cells. Through a combinatorial optimization algorithm, specifically, the
Simulated Annealing algorithm, each parameter of the model is evaluated, in
order to obtain the best combination for each one. Important parameters of the
model, such as temperature, charge transfer coefficient, resistance of materials,
theoretical potential, current, loss current, and some empirical variables, were
combined in order to evaluate the overpotentials. This allowed to establish the
optimal operation conditions for PEM fuel cells. Thus, it was possible to adjust
the parameters with proper values to minimize overpotentials and obtain a
better performance for PEM fuel cells.
