In recent years, the use of photocatalysis for hydrogen production from the
water splitting reaction and the photodegradation of pollutants have been
widely studied as an interesting alternative to reduce the energy and
environmental problematic derived of the use of fossil fuels [1]. However, it is
still a great challenge to find an ideal photocatalyst for practical use with high
active, low-cost, and long- term stability. Zinc sulfide (ZnS) has been intensively
studied due to its rich morphologies at the nanoscale, excellent physical
properties, and unique photocatalytic properties [2]. It has been reported that,
by the formation of hybrid nanostructures it is possible to provide a direct path
for the transfer of photo-induced charges and promote the separation of photogenerated
electron-hole pairs. In this work, ZnS/MoO 3 hybrid materials were
synthesized in one step at different Zn/Mo ratio by the hydrothermal route. The
structural and optical properties of these materials were determined by XRD,
SEM, TEM, XPS, UV and photoluminescence techniques. The photocatalytic
behavior of these photocatalysts was evaluated in the production of H 2 by the
water splitting reaction in presence of UV light.
