In mechatronics and robotics, ultrasonic sensors and infrared sensors are
commonly used for object detection or distance measurement. These low-cost
sensors cover most of the problems related to warning systems in the detection
of obstacles, stop systems or automatic braking and the prevention of collisions
with obstacles, based on a distance measurement system. In this work, the
efficiencies are analyzed and compared through the two measurement
techniques with the ultrasonic and infrared sensors, using obstacles of different
types of materials presented. A prototype model is used with the integration of
the sensors, moving with constant speed towards the different types of
obstacles of different materials to obtain the distance parameter. Using said
data acquired from the sensors, for a correlation analysis of the measured
distance with the actual distance made and obtain its curves and errors, which
allow to have the information for a better selection of the suitable sensor
(ultrasonic sensor only, infrared sensor only) or a combination of both sensors),
which also allows analyzing the best analysis technique with a better method of
analysis in the detection of objects and their different applications. Finally, the
different characteristics such as the range, lobe and other properties of the
sensors (reflection / absorption, polarization, speed, etc.) were also tested in the
experimental development.
