BATCH POLYMERIZATION PROCESS TO OBTAIN ENCAPSULATED
FRAGRANCES IN POLYMER HYDROGELS

In situ polymerization of multiple functional monomers in aqueous solution
containing complex fragrances, containing more than 130 components, most of
them containing alcohol derivatives, was carried out by cell cast process, capable
to process in a simple way 540 Kg of encapsulated per month. Monomer
emplyed were HEMA used as skeleton of the hydrogel, p-styrene sulfonic
sodium salt to disperse the hydrogel in water, acrylamide to attach the hydrogel
to clothes, The resulting fragrance-hydrogel system contained above 50 % of
fragrance with high elastic modulus enough to easy pulverize it. Different
amounts of monomers were tested previously to scale up the process. Different
characterization techniques gravimetry, TGA, FTIR were employed to
demontrate that fragrance could last encapsulated over 1 year.
