Layered double hydroxides, also known as hydrotalcite-like materials, are a class
of two-dimensional anionic clays which consist of positively charged mixed
metal hydroxide layers separated by charge-balancing anions and water
molecules. These compounds have the structural formula [M 2+ 1-xM 3+ x(OH)2](A m-
)x/m·nH2O. where M 2+ = Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Ni 2+ , etc.; M 3+ = Al 3+ , Cr 3+ , Ga 3+ , etc.; and A m-
denotes interlayer anions, such as NO 3- , SO4 2- , CO3 2- , etc. Typical values of x
range from 0.17 to 0.33. Layered double hydroxides are useful for many
applications including catalysis, drug delivery and adsorption. In this regard,
their chemical structure allows elimination of organic molecules, divalent and
trivalent heavy metals cations as well as some toxic anions. In this work, Zn-Al
layered double hydroxide was synthesized on an aluminum alloy grid by surface
reaction with Zn(NO3)2 and NaOH. The aluminum grids were observed by optical
microscopy in order to follow the reaction in situ during 24 h, and the layered
structure of surface product was evident by scanning electron microscopy. X-
Ray diffraction pattern shows the characteristic reflection of Zn-Al layered
double hydroxide. The results show that the material is promising to LDH
applications, more specifically in the environmental field.
