One of the methods to prepare a metal polymer, it is to start with a monomer
that per se has a metal as part of its structure, like the [Cu(VBA) 2 phenH 2 O]. The
chemical structure of this monomer is formed by a metal center of copper
surrounded by two oxygen atoms one VBA (Vinylbenzoic acid) and the other a
coordinated water molecule; also two nitrogen atoms phen (1,10-
phenanthroline). At the apical position of the distorted square pyramid is
occupied by an oxygen atom coming the other VBA ligand. We had designed this
kind of molecules taking in mind that the VBA has a vinyl group that could suffer
polymerization process like styrene. Then a new copolymer of
[Cu(VBA) 2 phenH 2 O-co-EGMA] n was obtained as a green powder, insoluble on
common organic solvents that suggest a probably reticular arrangement, µ eff 2.1
typical of paramagnetic compounds with copper(II), the particles size are of 280
nm, Anal. El. Exp. C 56.88, N 3.15, H 5.53% Calc. C 63.27, N 3.28, H 5.27%. Then,
we had suggested a statistic relationship of 2:3 between the monomer and
comonomer EGMA (ethylene glycol methacrylate), this was determined taking in
count the elemental analysis results against the thermogravimetric studies.
Previously reports, of similar materials to that obtained in this project, have
demonstrated their many applications like the photoluminescence properties,
the use like an adsorption resins, like catalysts, among others.
