IMPROVED TIO2-FE2O3 AS MIXED OXIDE FOR H2 PRODUCTION BY
WATER SPLITTING METHOD
TiO2–Fe2O3 mixed oxides (1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 10.0 wt.% Fe) photocatalyst were
prepared by the sol–gel method and used for the H2 generation from water
splitting method. The solids were characterized by SEM-EDS, N2 physisorption,
XRD, UV–Vis and XPS spectroscopy. High specific surface areas (83–205 m 2 /g)
were obtained in all the mixed oxides compared to the bare TiO2 sample (64
m 2 /g). XRD show that anatase phase is the predominant crystalline on the TiO2–
Fe2O3 solids. The band gap energy of the solids is in the interval from 3.0 to 2.5
eV which are in the same order than TiO2 (3.2 eV). These solids were proved in
the photocatalytic water splitting and resulted ten times more active (5586
mmol/h) than the reference TiO2 (190 mmol/h) semiconductor.
