In small constructions the quality of the materials, the cure and the proportions to
make concrete are not checked. This happens because in the budget of small
constructions like a house is not convenient the intervention of an engineer,
appealing to the knowledge or experience of masons for the elaborations of
concrete mixes. The objective is to check if the concrete in small constructions done
by hand made of the masons gets certain quality characteristics specified in the
non-destructive tests from Red Durar Handbook. The volcanic materials were
characterized with tests like: moisture, density, granulometry, mass per volume,
sedimentation, colorimetry, etc., taking the NMX standards as a reference. For the
elaboration of conventional concrete, two mixes recommended by masons in
Morelia were done, the proportions are described next: 50kg of cement, 110.75kg
of sand, 58.32kg of crushed stones and 29kg of water, getting a slump of 18cm,
and 50kg of cement, 110.75kg of sand, 58.32kg of crushed stones and 22kg of water,
getting a slump of 12cm. Cylinders with dimensions of 15x30cm were elaborated,
of which a certain number were exposed outdoor, and the rest were cured in
contact with controlled temperature water since the day of unmold. All specimens
were checked in non-destructive tests like: Ultrasonic pulse velocity and Electric
resistivity, at late ages. At ages of 540 days the specimens exposed outdoor since
the day of unmold present low values in the mentioned tests in comparison with
the specimens cured immersed in water. The specimens cured immersed in water
from the mix with a low relation water/cement present the best durability
characteristics according to the specified in the Red Durar Handbook.
