Stimuli-responsive hydrogels and membranes synthesized by gamma radiation
have emerged as a unique class of materials that can offer many advantages
over de conventional ones in separation process, i.e. pH-sensitive hydrogels and
copolymer hydrogels such as poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel, PAAc and
poly(vinylpyrrolidone/acrylic acid) copolymer hydrogel, PVP/PAAc, have been
investigated for absorption and desorption of heavy metals more than ten years
ago [1,2].
Nowadays, new arquitectures such as comb-type hydrogels supported onto
films are tested in this field, by incorporating some stimuli-responsive comonomers
either into the backbone of the network structure or as pendant
groups, it is possible to prepare pH-sensitive hydrogels with chelating ability
toward metal ions [3,4].
In this work we present the comb-type system (net-AAc)-g-4VP grafted onto PP
films their characterization and its complexes with copper (II) ions in acidic
aqueous medium. We present the adsorption of Cu 2+ ions by two different
hydrogel supported systems as a function of grafting percentage of PAAc, at pH=
4.0 . Conventional hydrogel of PAAc, net-[PP-g-AAc] crosslinked at 20 kGy and
the comb-type grafted hydrogel of net-[PP-g-AAc]–g-4VP(12%).
This copolymer system is important because of its ability to form complexes with
transition metal ions athough this is a very complex system, the obtained
structure-properties correlation gives a very reasonable result in metals
absortion.
