Aluminum-Lithium alloys are light weight and high performance materials that
can be used in welded structures. Its use is common in applications where
weight saving is crucial, like the aeronautical and automotive industry. Thus, the
effects of lithium and magnesium additions in the mechanical properties and
weldability to A380 and A390 which are aluminum-silicone alloys were
investigated.
Lithium (1%) and magnesium (2.5%) were added to the alloys A380 and A390,
melting was performed in an induction furnace and the casting was performed
in permanent molds to obtain plate test specimens. These were then welded by
friction stir welding to evaluate the efficiency and the metallurgy of the welded
zone. All samples were characterized by optical microscopy and the hardness
and resistance were evaluated.
