It is known that TiO 2 is one of the most used semiconductors in photocatalysis
and its properties depend of crystal structures (anatase, rutile, brookite, and
TiO 2 (β)) that combining them could achieve synergic effects. Its main drawback
is the band gap of 3.2 eV that avoids the use of sunlight. In this research were
synthesized TiO 2 , Fe-TiO 2 , Ce-TiO 2 and La-TiO 2 compounds at different
concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mol-%) and thermal treatments at 425, 475 and
525 °C. The nanopowders were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction to determine
the TiO 2 phases in the specimens. The characteristic peaks of the anatase and
rutile phases were detected in the compounds. In addition, some extra peaks
appeared at 15° and 26° in 2θ indicating the formation of the TiO 2 (β). It is
important to mention that is difficult to detect this phase due the overlapped of
the reflections with the anatase and rutile phase, however, it was confirmed by
Rietveld refinement results. TEM micrographs showed the crystal sizes in order
of nanometers (
