CENTURY 21TH UNIVERSITIES AS BACKBONE OF KNOWLEDGE
AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In the so-called knowledge economy scientific research, technological
development and innovation are essential precursors of competitiveness and
economic development.Derived this approach, there is also the concept of
innovation ecosystem that, in essence, is a collaboration scheme between
municipal and supramunicipal actors involved in the R+TD+i (Research,
Technological Development, innovation) Sustainability is based in achieving a
balanced innovation ecosystem in the multiple interaction dynamics between all
the stake holders. To create a regional environment that favors the emergence
and sustainability of these ecosystems is necessary the development of the
stake holders themselves in each area (Setting Up) and the understanding and
channeling of the flows that occur between them (connections). Therefore, a
strong impulse is required, promoting collaborative links between scientists,
technologists, academics and industrialists. In the described context, the
university plays a fundamental role in the access to knowledge economies by
taking charge of three key functions: Generates, Applies and provides
knowledge to the system through R & D and technology transfer; Transfers
Human Talent to social and economic agents thanks to its training activity; It
consolidates the networks between people who are the seed of the professional
networks necessary to configure an integrated ecosystem. However, in the new
knowledge economy, the university must move forward in the value chain of
knowledge adopting a new position in the environment, going being knowledge
provider to a backbone agent of knowledge.
