THERMAL TREATMENTS IN STEELS USING SOLAR ENERGY<br />

THROUGH FRESNEL LENSES<br />

The traditional methods of steel thermal treatments make use of equipment<br />

that reaches high temperatures by heating with resistances, induction, natural<br />

gas or a mixture of them. In addition, if treatment is required in a specific area<br />

of the material, it is required to section the piece or introduce the piece to the<br />

oven and heat the entire piece. The use of Fresnel lenses allows concentrating<br />

solar energy in an area (focus) of variable size. In this work, Fresnel lenses<br />

manufactured with PMMA were used, which had a lens area of 0.78 m 2 with<br />

variable heat treatment points in the range 1 - 12 cm 2 according to the<br />

temperature required for the specific thermal treatment. AISI alloys 1045 and<br />

4140 were used considering that the carbon content allows a hardening of the<br />

alloy when the austenitizing temperature is exceeded and cooled at different<br />

speeds. The pieces were evaluated before the test, with heat treatment in muffle<br />

and with thermal treatment with Fresnel lenses. Metallographic<br />

characterization, micro-hardness, and XRD were carried out identifying the<br />

phases and correlating them to the material hardness.<br />
