Co-Ni-Fe alloyed nanoparticles improve the magnetic behavior of individual
element nanoparticles, making the alloyed materials suitable for medical
applications such as in vivo imaging, diagnosis of multiple diseases and
treatment of cancer by magnetic hyperthermia.
In this investigation, Co-Ni-Fe Nanoparticles (CNF-Np) doped with Nd were
synthetized by reactive mechanical milling of a mix of iron chloride (FeCl2, 99.99
%), cobalt chloride (CoCl2, 99.99 %), nickel chloride (NiCl2, 99.99 %) and
neodymium chloride (NdCl3 %) in a ratio of 25:25:25:25 wt. % during 30 h.
Sodium (Na, 99.99 %) was added as precursor for the reaction and sodium
chloride (NaCl, 99.99 %) as anticaking agent. After the milling process, the
nanoparticles were cleaned in milli-Q water and decanted several times to
remove the NaCl, and finally dried in argon flux.
X-Ray Diffraction showed neodymium hydroxide and Fe-Co-Ni alloy as the
phases present in the obtained sample. Transmission electron microscopy
confirmed that nanoparticles were achieved as conglomerated clusters with an
average diameter of 3 nm. Whiskers like NdHO-nanostructures were also
obtained in the same sample. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry showed that
Nd was incorporated in Fe-Co-Ni alloyed nanoparticles as dopant. M-H curbs
were obtained with a 1 T magnetic field and showed a ferromagnetic behavior.
The confirmed magnetic activity of CNF-Np doped with Nd could be useful for
cancer treatment by magnetic hyperthermia.
