In the present research composites in the Al-Zn/Al 2 O 3 system were fabricated
using exothermic reaction. Al-ZnO mixtures with ZnO percentages of 10, 20, and
30 wt.% were reacted during 1, 2 and 4 h at 950 ° C. The composition and
reaction time were analyzed in order to study the effect of these variables on
the densification in the composites. Likewise, its effect on the distribution, size,
and shape of the particles of alumina in Al- Zn matrix was analyzed. The results
indicated that the density increases with reaction time for the compositions of
10 and 20 wt.% of ZnO, attributing this phenomenon to the evaporation of Zn
during the stage of sintering since this evaporates at approximately 907 °C. The
microstructure was studied by optical microscopy and scanning electron
microscopy. The SEM analyses indicate that the reinforcement phase increased
when the ZnO percentage is higher in the Al-ZnO mixture. Besides, the EDS
analyses show that the Zn percentage in the matrix decreases with long
sintering time. The complete conversion of ZnO to Al 2 O 3 based on reaction time
was confirmed by the XRD results.
