Cathodic protection is considered an effective protection technique to combat
the corrosion of reinforced concrete structures. This work describes the
electrochemical behavior of three galvanic zinc anodes placed on reinforced
concrete slabs manufactured with and without addition of chloride ions and
according to the “Protocol to Evaluate the Performance of Corrosion Mitigation
Technologies in Concrete Repairs. The measurements consisted in measuring
corrosion potential of the reinforcing steel (Ecorr) during and after the curing
period, corrosion potential of the anode (Ecorr), polarized potential (Epol),
galvanic current (Igalv) and depolarization potentials obtained after 1s (Einst off),
4 hours (E4) and 24 hours (E24) to interrupt the current between the anode and
steel. They were made during 500 days in accordance with ASTM and NACE
standards. The three anodes turned out to be a functional system for the
protection of reinforcing steel, as long as: the area to be protected is adequate
and calculated by design, the repair mortar is selected and applied correctly.
