ZnO nanowires array (ZnO NwA) has acquired attention in recent years due to
the wide applications based on photocatalytic activity such as water purification,
antibacterial devices and environmental cleaning technologies.
In this work ZnO NwA was synthetized by thermal treatment of Zn (99.99 %)
substrate commercially acquired Merc. The substrate was cleaned in HCl 0.5 M
to degrease the Zn foil, and then in a HNO3 2 M solution to remove oxide
surface, finally the substrate was sonicated in water milli-Q and dried with argon
flux. Afterward cleaning process, the substrate was oxidized in furnace at 600 °C
for 5h in a 21 wt. % oxygen atmosphere.
ZnO nanowires achieved over all the substrate was confirmed by Scanning
Electron Microscopy with an average diameter of 100 nm and length of 5 µm.
The X-Ray Diffraction pattern confirms ZnO and Zn phases present in the
obtained samples.
The photocatalytic activity of ZnO NwA was confirmed by measure methylene
blue degradation, showing a 10 % of efficiency.
Keywords: methylene blue, ZnO nanowires, thermal treatment
