Antimicrobial textiles have received extensive attention due to public health and
personal hygiene concerns. Moreover, pathogenic microorganisms have also
gained immunity against existing antibacterial products. For these reasons, new
and stronger antibacterial agents are needed to be developed. In this work,
silver nanowires (Ag NWs) were used as antimicrobial agents decorated onto
conventional textiles through a facile and scalable dip-drying method.
Antimicrobial performance of the fabrics was investigated against strains of a
Gram-positive coccus Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC#25923), a Gramnegative
bacilli Escherichia coli (E. coli, ATCC#25922), a Gram-positive bacilli and
spore forming bacteria Bacillus cereus (B. cereus, ATCC#14603) and a yeast-like
fungus Candida albicans (C. albicans, ATCC#90028) via disk diffusion and time
kill methods. Modified fabrics showed superior antimicrobial performance
against all bacteria, even when modified with small amounts of Ag NWs (0.095
mg/cm 2 ).
Keywords: silver nanowires, antimicrobial textiles, functional textiles
