2.7 READ AND EXCERPT FROM LITERATURE
– Consciously choose a reading technique when studying the literature which enables
accuracy and saves time.
– Decide which original positions or summary positions should be excerpted from a work
on index cards or directly in the PC.
– Store the excerpts in an accessible file system.
– Capture each excerpted title with its bibliographic references and information from the
reading or key word cards, or with a computer using a literature management program.
2.8 CITE SOURCES
– Choose appropriate literature for the scientific work which is worth citing and can becited.
– Distinguish between sources and further reading. Use titles which find direct application
to the scientific work in your source directory only.
– Always work with the latest version of the title, and use primary sources as much as possible.
– Quote moderately, as indirectly as possible, less often directly. But do not forget to iden-
tify the quote.
– Cite correctly giving all the required bibliographic information.
– Cite uniformly with a continuous use of a certain technique; recommendation: Harvard
technique.
2.9 ARGUE IN A SCIENTIFIC MANNER
– Bring together sufficient material for your study. Pay attention to an appropriate amount
of primary material.
– Use hypotheses methods and derive the proof through scientific processing of the mate-
rials for the hypotheses which are advanced.
– Check to see that the processed material is sufficient to support the hypotheses and can
lead to claims.
– Determine whether the material read offers enough conclusions and can be distilled into
hypotheses.
– Refer to limitations of the presented topics in the form of rejections, concessions or
narrowing of the area of application, and derive conclusions and recommendations for
further investigations.
