121 Presenting scientific work
– Ensure that the public receives information about your professional abilities and your
experience in relation to the topic.
– Give the goal of your presentation to the audience early, before your main section.
2.11 DEVELOP YOUR ARGUMENTATION
– Check to see if the audience needs or expects information about the history (see Chapter 2.1).
– State, if applicable, before the series of arguments, the purpose of the research, condi-
tions and backgrounds in your presentation.
– Choose the appropriate series of arguments in sets of three or five.
– Check the approach of technical attention-stimulating and -holding presentation of the
arguments (LEHMANN, G.: 2009. p. 74)
– Identify the quotations with
– open and close quotes
– vocal means, or through
– conscious reading.
– Use numbers sparingly and correctly, pay attention to timeliness, interpret them correctly,
and try to illustrate them.
2.12 STRUCTURE YOUR CONCLUSION
– Announce the end of the presentation. Use a short pause (2 to 3 seconds) for effect after
this termination, and look around at the audience.
– Cover two to three core statements (no more than that!) and the consequences resulting
from these. Speak with a normal tone with a more or less slow speech tempo.
– Avoid new arguments in support of key messages.
– Formulate questions to offer for discussion (maximum of three questions). Do not ask
questions which have not been justified in the main.
– Challenge the participants with a »call to action«. Increase your voice and speed up your
tempo for this.
– Avoid using a slide at the end with the phrase »Thank you for your attention«. It is better to
thank the participants by speaking simply, so that they can sense that you are truly thankful.
2.13 GATHER FEEDBACK
– Carefully prepare the question and discussion round in all three parts.
– Ask the audience expressly for questions and opinions. Stimulate discussion.
