In addition to the description <strong>of</strong> the components <strong>of</strong> the magic triangle, the project manager must<br />

take enough time (see questions from the goal area, Fig. 3) to formulate the project's goal(s).<br />

Question the aims <strong>of</strong> a project:<br />

– What for?<br />

what will the project achieve?<br />

what is the client's interest in the project?<br />

are there legal requirements?<br />

– for whom?<br />

who are those participating in or impacted by the project (stakeholders)?<br />

how do these groups influence the project?<br />

– What's the final result?<br />

what is the defined final result <strong>of</strong> the project?<br />

what results/performance will satisfy the client?<br />

– Measurement criteria?<br />

what defined quality is expected?<br />

how will the final result be measured?<br />

Another important aid to the identification <strong>of</strong> project goals is again the magic triangle <strong>of</strong> project<br />

<strong>management</strong> (Fig. 2).<br />

Project goals are always (as well):<br />

– Deadlines<br />

– Cost targets<br />

– Performance targets
