117 Presenting scientific work
The history is a reach back to the events preceding the presentation and the follow-up is the
active structuring of the contacts gained.
2 CHECKLIST
2.1 STRUCTURE AN ENSEMBLE
– Structure the presentation as an ensemble of the parts: lecture, question and discussion
rounds, history and follow-up.
– Use the presentation to derive maximum participant feedback.
– Use at least half of the time given for the presentation for question and answer sessions.
– Check the history and determine the relevant expectations of the participants.
– Structure the follow-up in regards to the consequences for further work and the initiation
and maintenance of contacts.
2.2 FORMULATE GOALS IN A CONCRETE MANNER
– Describe as concretely as possible what the participants should do after the presentation,
what they think, how they act or how they should behave.
– Use active verb forms for the description of the target. Give the measuring rod in order to
determine how much of the goal is achieved; for example, give the concrete changes in
opinion or behavior.
– Check during the entire preparation how realistic the chosen goal formulation proves to be.
2.3 ANALYZE THE PARTICIPANTS
– Invest sufficient time to analyze the participants
– Determine the participants' situations:
– Roles in studies and science,
– Respect and knowledge of the subject,
– Intellectual conditions and requirements for the presentation.
– Determine the participants' interest
– Contents which interest the participants,
– Information with meaning,
– Arguments which speak to their interests,
– Arguments which must be especially justified.
