“Immigrants are often in the society, but not yet of it.”<br />

Portes interessieren die Gründe für Immigration in die USA und deren Folgen sowie die Anpassungsstrategien<br />

der verschiedenen Einwanderer- Nationalitäten. Besondere Bedeutung maß er den<br />

Phänomenen der transnationalen Communities, ethnischen Enklaven und der Ökonomie des<br />

informellen Sektors bei. Eines seiner neueren Forschungsfelder ist die zweite Einwanderergeneration.<br />
